Laura Long of The Organized Note
What inspired you to start your business?
I’m an elementary music teacher, and after 20 years in education, I realized it was time for something new — something that would allow me to be more present for my family emotionally and create a healthier balance in my life. I started The Organized Note this past summer with the goal of building a business that could eventually replace my teaching career.
When I discovered the world of virtual assistance, it felt like a natural fit — combining the skills I’ve honed as a teacher with my love for organization and technology. It was scary to invest in myself and take those first steps, but once I did, I knew it was real and worth pursuing.
What’s been your biggest fear and biggest challenge in your first year?
My biggest fear was starting something completely new after two decades in a different field — wondering if I could really make it work. My biggest challenge has been learning how to market myself and show up confidently online. But along the way, I’ve found joy in making genuine connections with people who share my values and passions, and that has been incredibly rewarding.
What does success look like to you, and what type of impact are you hoping to make?
Success, to me, isn’t about going viral or collecting likes — it’s about connection and transformation. I’ve shifted my focus from virtual assistance to helping coaches and course creators design programs that reflect their big dreams and truly transform their clients’ lives. Using my background in education and curriculum design, I want to help others bring clarity and structure to their ideas so they can make an impact.
Why do you believe people should bet on themselves and take the leap to start a business doing what they love?
Because you don’t want to live your life wondering what if. Taking risks is scary, but staying stuck is scarier. I want to show my kids that it’s never too late to start something new — that with courage and support, you can build a life that’s fulfilling and aligned with your values.
If chosen for this grant, how would it help you continue building your business?
This grant would help me invest in coaching and professional development to grow my business with confidence. It would also help me expand my services and reach more people who need support turning their ideas into structured, meaningful online courses. Ultimately, it would allow me to keep moving toward my goal of full-time entrepreneurship while being more present for my family.
