Aldo Covarrubias Gomez of Sin Booze

What inspired you to start your business?

My sobriety inspired me to start Sin Booze. When I stopped drinking, I realized how few exciting, non-alcoholic options were available. I wanted to create the kind of experience I was craving — something inclusive, celebratory, and elevated that helped people feel connected while honoring their choice not to drink. Staying sober motivates me to build this business, and building this business reinforces my commitment to sobriety. They go hand in hand.

What were your biggest fears or doubts before taking the leap — and what gave you the courage to go for it?

My biggest fear was failure — and sometimes, success too. Both felt real. But choosing sobriety was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, and sticking with it showed me that I can do hard things. If I could overcome that, I knew I could build a business.

What’s been your biggest win and biggest challenge in your first year?

Funding has been the biggest challenge. I’ve put everything I have into Sin Booze — all my time, effort, and savings. My biggest win has been hosting an event for over 200 people and receiving incredible feedback from guests and the host. That moment of validation showed me I’m creating something that matters.

What does success look like to you, and what type of impact are you hoping to make?

Success means becoming the go-to non-alcoholic vendor for private events and creating a culture where not drinking feels cool. I want to shift the narrative completely. One day, I hope we’ll look back and say, “Remember when we needed alcohol to party? That was wild.” That’s the kind of change I want to help create.

Why do you believe people should bet on themselves and take the leap to start a business doing what they love?

Everyone should act on what excites them most — that’s when you’re most aligned with yourself. For me, Sin Booze isn’t just work; it’s an extension of my values and recovery. When you do what you love, challenges feel lighter and the work feels meaningful. Authenticity is what people connect with most, and that’s what Sin Booze stands for.

If chosen for this grant, how would it help you continue building your business?

This grant would be a game-changer. I’d use it to upgrade my mobile mocktail cart, invest in better equipment, and expand to larger events and festivals. I’d also use it to create professional marketing assets and invest in tools like Dubsado to improve client experiences — making the journey from booking to event seamless and personal as we continue to grow.
